John MacGregor (1825 – 1892) was a wealthy Scotsman of eclectic interests with a taste for adventure. He graduated from Trinity College. Cambridge. became a barrister at – law in the Temple. London. MacGregor generally ignored the
practice after 1853 and devoted his life to travel and philanthropy, and formed and became Captain of the Royal Canoe
Club: England. In addition to A Thousand Miles, be also wrote three other popular voyaging books. A Voyage alone in the Yawl Rob Roy (1867). The Rob Ray on the Baltic (1867), and The Rob Roy on the Jordan, Red Sea, and Gennesareth (1869). For each trip, MacGregor had a new decked canoe built which retained its predecessors title.
This book was published by Sampson Low, 1900? undated. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. All text pages present and clean, map as new. Dark Green embossed cover cloth with gilt title. Inscription lable St. Thomas Parish Church, Sabbarth School, Presented to Thomas Hart for regular attendence. This is very rare and in perfect condition for its age. This is a log of a cruise in a small canoe, designed by the writer. Paddled and sailed the following waters: The Rivers, Thames, Sambre, Meuse, Rhine, Main, Danube, Reuss, Aar, Ill, Moselle, Meurthe, Marne, and Seine. The Lakes: Titisee, Constance, Unter See, Zurich, Zug and Lucerne, together with six canals in Belgium and France, and two expeditions in the open sea of the English Channel. The route on land led sometimes over mountains and through forests and plains, where the canoe had to be carried or dragged. There is one coloured frontispiece, one fold-out map, 16 b/w drawings. Truly an epic adventure, requiring fitness, navigating- and linguistic skills to be successful in overcoming the many obstacles on route.
