This larger photograph shows a young family on the beach in full Victorian costume with a large changing wagon behind. Looking closely at this tin plate photograph you can see in great detail, sand still sticking the wagon wheels. A few light scratches and original chemical marks on photograph edges, otherwise in good condition. This old photograph on tin / metal measures 8cm by 7cm.the image of a tintype would always be reversed. Nevertheless, the tintype process was widely used for portraiture, being the cheapest form of portrait available. It was often used by travelling photographers, including seaside photographs. Some attractive tintypes in cases have been found, but typically, a tintype photo was of a limited range of tones, the lighter tones lacking life. This tinplate is a very large example, twice the size of the more common tinplates. The black and white tones are excellent, with digital help can be improved. Mercury chloride was sometimes used to whiten the image. Tintype photographs were often produced by beach photographers. Edinburgh is situated close to Portobello, a popular seaside resort around 1900.
This photograph is a one off and therefore unique, no negatives with this chemical process, over 130 years later.
